Survey on medium-size Italian businesses

This is a survey compiled by Mediobanca's Research Department in conjunction with the Centro Studi of Unioncamere with the objective of producing a report on medium-size Italian businesses. The Bocconi University of Milan took part in the early stages of the project from 2000 to 2002 via its CREA "Furio Cicogna" Research Centre, while other Italian universities have also been involved since 2003.

The project comprises a survey of all medium-size enterprises based in Italy. The annual report contains:

• a database of financial aggregates compiled from balance-sheet data, broken down by region and sector, and including the main indicators. Data was first collected in 1996; the ten-year series is updated annually; this database is also available as a text format file (extension .prn), which can also be used as an ordinary electronic spreadsheet (see the download section);
• comments on the main balance sheet/P&L trends;
• additional papers by academics, who are generally economists with particular expertise in a given area;
• with the 2009 edition, the first year has shifted from 1996 to 1997; the statistical series for the 1996-2005 period are available for download.

Publications are issued annually. The first covers firms in all regions of Italy (1^st edn 2003); the second firms specifically in the North West of Italy (1^st edn 2003); and the third those in the North East (1^st edn 2001). A volume bringing together all the comments made by academics and the testimonies given by entrepreneurs when the 2003 reports were presented is also available. The publications may be downloaded entirely free of charge from the relevant area of this website, or ordered in a limited number of print copies
